Celina OdehShe is one of three Palestinians who received PCRF’s help to come to the US for leg injury treatment. At least 1,000 children in Gaza have had one or both legs amputated, UNICEF reported in December. Doctors feared that she may have needed both legs amputated, but with adequate care and treatment, she has avoided that outcome. An anxious wait to return homeEvacuating to the United States is not the obvious answer for all injured children, Hailat said. “We’re trying to limit how many people we bring to the United States.

The four children had survived horrors in Gaza. But on Sunday morning, they reached the end of an arduous journey out of the conflict zone and into American hospitals to receive urgent medical care. They flew from Cairo to Kennedy Airport, where they were greeted with much fanfare by a crowd of about 50 people carrying plush toys, flowers and bobbing balloons. Among the children was Fadi Alzant, 6, a gaunt boy with pale skin and strawberry blond hair who appeared dazed as the crowd rushed around his wheelchair. An airport employee grew agitated and shouted at people to disperse and to put away their cameras.

Evacuees From Gaza Arrived in Egypt

Dozens of people left Gaza and entered Egypt today, the first such exits since the start of the war between Hamas and Israel. They included some people with foreign or dual nationalities as well as seriously injured Palestinians and their families. Ramona Okumura, a Seattle resident who is a volunteer for the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, confirmed in a text message that she was able to cross into Egypt from Gaza at the Rafah border crossing. The crossings came after a deal was negotiated last night among Israel, Egypt, Hamas, the U.S. and Qatar. The 500 to 600 American citizens in Gaza were not among today’s evacuees, other than those working for aid groups, but they were scheduled to follow in batches beginning tomorrow.
